Suspenseful Fun!

I was fortunate enough to see this at a film fest and have to say it was definitely the best movie I saw! The storyline keeps you on the edge of your seat, and at the end I just kept thinking "Please don't be over, please don't be over". . . I felt so connected to the story I didn't want it to end.
Jessica Chastain may not currently be a recognizable name, but my assessment is that she will be soon. Her performance was captivating. Her scenes in the Doctor's office chilled me to the bone! Adding the indisputable talent of her counterpart Helen Mirren into the mix is the perfect cocktail. Definitely a girls kick a** experience! The Debt weaves together many layers, (as any movie worth watching should do!). Action, suspense, romance, beauty and conflict - a movie I'll be dragging all my girlfriends to.

Synopsis:
In 1987, Eddie and Mitch moved into a low-rent apartment in San Francisco where, through paper-thin walls, they were informally introduced to their middle-aged alcoholic neighbors, Raymond (a raging homophobe) and Peter (a flamboyant gay man). For 18 months, they hung a microphone from their kitchen window to chronicle the bizarre relationship between their borderline-insane neighbors, accidentally creating one of the world’s first “viral” counter-culture sensations on the underground tape market. Actress Olivia Wilde said in an interview on US talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live that there is less of her than you actually see in a nude scene in her upcoming film The Change Up.

The actress, who described her co-star Daniel Craig in another upcoming move Cowboys & Aliens as the most beautiful man on earth, said that she wasn't actually totally nude in the flick's sex scene.
"I appeared to be naked ... because they CGI'd me naked," said Wilde, who split from husband of eight years, Italian prince Tao Ruspoli, in February.

The actress, who was ranked No.1 on Maxim magazine's Hot 100 in 2009, said the pasties she wore to cover her nipples and preserve her modesty were clearly visible in the scene, due to a staging glitch. To preserve the scene's authenticity, the producers digitally overwrote the pasties with artificial nipples.

"In that scene Ryan Reynolds is supposed to be covering them and he moved and so the pasties were in the movie and so they had to paint in nipples using CGI," Wilde said. "And I got to approve the nipples! They sent me an email saying, 'Please review nipple cover shot one through seven and decide which one is most like the original.'"

"I don't know what (the producer) was using as source material... but I think it's pretty close," Wilde said.

3 Ninjas: Synopsis:

Amazing movie, visually stunning...

Just got out of the screening of this movie at the Independent Film Fest of Boston. Bellflower is a visually stunning movie and is sure to make help make the career of the star/director and a few other members of the supporting cast.
The basic premise is that two friends decide to future-proof themselves by creating weaponry designed for ruling a potential post-apocalyptic wasteland. They figure that if Mad Max has taught us anything it is that whoever has the most badass weapons will end up on top.
Evan Glodell, Jessie Wiseman, Tyler Dawson and Rebekah Brandes turn in impressive performances. I am sure that we will be seeing plenty of Jessie Wiseman.
The film was shot on handmade cameras that the director built which allowed him to create amazing tilt-shift visuals. All of the gadgets featured in the film were also built by the director for the movie. Filming happened over the course of 3 years on a meager budget of only $17,000, an amazing feat.
If this movie is playing at a local festival you need to go see it ASAP. I'm pretty sure that there will be plenty of buzz surrounding the film once it gets a wider release.

Another Welcome Spanish Import...

Guillem Morales's film 'Los ojos de Julia' (English translation: 'Julia's Eyes') is another recent Spanish import from the production desk of Guillermo Del Toro which manages to adequately combine an engaging plot with many well-orchestrated visual sequences.

Julia (Belen Rueda) is devastated when she finds out that her sister twin Sara (also played by Rueda) has committed suicide, apparently due to her inability to cope with her recent blindness which is part of a genetic disease that will effect both sisters throughout their lifetimes. Sensing something is wrong and with her sight slowly fading, Julia alongside her husband Isaac (Lluis Homar) sets out to investigate her lingering suspicions surrounding her sister's death. Including an apparent boyfriend that nobody can ever recall seeing nor can they describe him and the myriad of characters which she encounteres throughout her existence. As Julia's sight begins to slowly fade, she must attempt to unravel the mystery behind her sister's death.

Where Morales makes 'Julia's Eyes' work is in the combination of subtle close-up shots, atmospheric lighting and the alternating use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound, he and cinematographer Oscar Faura literally place the viewer within the confines of central protagonist. Instead of simply utilizing the age-old, and overcooked mainstream cinematic method of providing a false scare, followed by heightened non-diegetic sound, they as an alternative, allow the emphasis of the situation to be drawn from Julia's surroundings. Close-up, and medium-close-up shots of insignificant objects, and segments of wall, become ever more important as Julia's eyesight begins to slowly fade. While the avoidance of recording any distinguishing facial features of many male characters, especially during the second and third acts of the film, not only instils a sense of mystery in the title, but also again represents Julia's impending loss of sight. By primarily using the visual aesthetics to communicate to the audience the tone and atmosphere of the piece, Morales extends the engagement of the picture to further audiences by not necessarily providing a scare with every scene, but by consistently keeping the tension up at a high level.

The film isn't without flaw however; the story is cluttered with many sequences essentially repeating aspects of the story that have already been stated for the viewer and this unfortunately adds a further ten minutes to the running time of the picture. While the actors Belen Rueda and Lluis Homar provide strong emotional performances throughout, the majority of the remaining cast members attempt nothing to step outside of their stereotypical roles, nor is any screen-time provided for them with any depth beyond their scope as a one-time narrative pusher. Everybody else becomes somewhat of a pawn in Julia's mystery and while there are some potentially interesting characters around her, they are never fully developed to the extent where they can make an impact on the film's overall narrative. 'Julia's Eyes' is yet another above-average addition to the Spanish horror/thriller genre, which despite being slightly overlong, contains a solid story with many convoluted and inter-connected twists keeping the third act engrossing until the end credit sequence begins.

It all started when Alba and Spy Kids director Robert Rodriquez were making Machete.
"When I became a mother, I talked to him about getting back to work and how does he do it, how does he juggle spending time with his family [Rodriguez has five children] but also focus on his career because he's done it so well," Alba tells me.
"So when I was shooting Machete, him seeing me trying to change my kid's diaper and take conference calls and I'm on the set trying to learn lines and trying to do a million things at once kind of inspired him to write the character that I play—a woman who's trying to do a millions things at once."
Alba, who stars as a suburban mom juggling motherhood and her secret life as a spy in the fourth installment of Rodriquez's wildly successful family-friendly franchise (opening Aug. 19), is pregnant with her and hubby Cash Warren's second baby.
"I really can't imagine having more than this—more than what's happening right now," Alba said while rubbing her belly. "Kids are a lot of work and at the end of a pregnancy, it's sort of like you can't really imagine having more. But we'll see."
And we'll also have to see if Alba reunites with Rodriguez on a Sin City sequel. "We talked about while we were shooting the first one and then we talked about it again while we were shooting Spy Kids and Machete," she said. "But, why wouldn't I? It was left so open-ended. I loved doing that movie."

I saw exactly what I was afraid of. A pure Luc Besson very entertaining and sleepless crap product. Even filled wit pills, you stay awake all along this high power movie absolutely full of emptiness. No sense at all in this story of vengeance, where the characterization is really awful, terrible and every sequence incredible at possible. You could fill a library only in describing all the unbelievable situations of this film. You also may recognize a Luc Besson's piece of work at first sight. As some decades ago, with Cannon Group - Golan Globus -'s crap.
Such a shame that Olivier Megaton - the director of LA SIRENE ROUGE - chose to make films with Besson. He made the wrong choice, see for instance LE TRANSPORTEUR 3. He penetrates in his own doom.
