Movie Plot:

Sacha Baron Cohen's character Admiral General Aladeen (from the upcoming film "The Dictator") gave the GOP hopeful quite the nod during a press conference at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel, saying Romney "has the makings of a great dictator."In the film, Cohen plays a dictator who believes other rulers like him are being unfairly maligned by the West. The strong, sexy presence of Eva Mendes and the girlish perkiness of Cierra Ramirez can only go so far to make the forced mother-daughter dramedy "Girl in Progress" tolerable.It's a coming-of-age story that knows it's a coming-of-age story – as in, our young heroine is well aware of the conventions of this kind of tale and goes out of her way to manufacture various rites of passage to expedite her transformation from innocence to womanhood. Ramirez's character, the teenage Ansiedad, literally creates a flow chart in her bedroom and spells out her strategy with her only friend (the sweetly nerdy Raini Rodriguez) – whom she'll soon cast aside, she declares, because it's a necessary step in the process.Breaking down and sending up a specific genre is fine if the script is strong enough to get away with such cutesy self-reference, as in "Juno" and "Easy A." Director Patricia Riggen and screenwriter Hiram Martinez don't go far enough, don't dig deep enough with these characters. They play it too safe, which makes "Girl in Progress" feel like a slightly racier version of an ABC Family show – and the flat, overly bright lighting further makes it feel like forgettable television....Do you think it's possible that, by the end, they'll both have learned some lessons and assumed their rightful roles?........

Movie Review:
Upon first seeing the trailer for this movie last month, my film professor called Dark Shadows an "Abomination to the original TV series."Having never been a fan of the series myself, I can not say weather or not this was fact, but I can say Dark Shadows is a bit of an embarrassment. In the film, Johnny Depp takes on another role where he is cursed with the gift of immortal life. I have always wondered what it would be like to never die, as I have always imagined it would be dreadful (take Captain Jack Sparrow for example). About halfway into this film, I knew what that feeling must be as I was staring at the screen thinking to myself "oh please just kill me now", but nope - I was forced to live on and see one embarrassing scene after the next.What was Tim Burton thinking when he did this film? He is a good director, not a great one, but a good one. He knows how to put a story together. But with Dark Shadows, all you really get is a collection of stale jokes that are not very funny......
